BORREGO FISH
Borrego Fish are inspired by the idea of transition.The process of change or passage from one stage to another. Ourselves and our environment are in a constant state of change. Layers of stories, experiences and time pile one atop another leaving their marks on our history.
Six million years ago the Anza Borrego Desert we see today held the ancient Gulf of California filled with tropical waters and marine life. Over the next 5 1/2 million years changes occurred gradually, faults active, the formation of the Grand Canyon and sediment settling into the Gulf. The once predominate marine environment transitioned into an intermittent terrestrial one until 500 thousand years ago when everything dried up and the fish, plant and marine life became trapped in the mud.
The fossils left behind beneath our feet, leave a mark connecting us in a tangible way to life that existed millions of years ago.

* Palimpset is a manuscript on which the text has been scraped or washed off so the page can be reused for another document—something reused or altered, but still bearing visible traces from its earlier form.
